Why do you think Call of Duty has such a long lasting appeal?

I'd say the multi-player mode increases the excitement tenfold. Working with your friends together in a realistic war game is far more enjoyable than just blasting the enemy on your own (think of how fun it is to work together with someone in a paintball game).

Another aspect that probably separates it from other shooter games is that it deals with wars that are more recent. To be honest, I think that the gaming companies of the past were afraid to be so bold as to make WWII games, but then again, perhaps I am mistaken. Anybody know if there were WWII games before Call of Duty?
