Best Buy Lying to Customers About 'Last' Wii
By Susan Arendt November 14, 2007 | 10:02:35 AMCategories: Console Games
The Best Buy in Princeton, NJ has been pulling a bit of a fast one on customers, repeatedly selling the store's "last Wii" over and over again.

A reader of The Consumerist reports that while he was shopping in the store over the weekend, he saw a Best Buy employee walk by with a Wii held over his head, announcing that it was the store's last one. A couple eagerly snatched it up, commenting how happy their kids would be.

About a half hour later, a different employee came by with a Wii, as an announcement went out over the store's PA that this was the store's last Wii:

I was now in the store solely to witness more of this sales technique. The second Wii took just over 15 minutes to sell - I overheard two manager-types (one in a suit, the other a yellow shirt) discussing it, the suit asking "Did Julie sell that Wii, yet? How long?" And then "Wait 40 minutes and send out the next one."

This can't be a gimmick to make sure that Wiis will sell--Best Buy has to know that they could put their entire stock out on the floor and it would be gone in a few hours at most. So why the act? Perhaps to get people to linger in the store longer, picking up $900 camcorders on a whim, I don't know.

what a cheap scheme lol

Well, I wouldn't exactly call it a scam. Best Buy is just stupid, because people are probably only going to buy one expensive thing a day. And if they are under the impression that people will stay, they won't. If it were me, as soon as they would say that they have sold the last one, I would've left immediately...

why didnt they just say

5 ways left till were out of stock
no stock in till next month
or summit
that would have been responcible and probs more buyers, think of the people that didnt buy them in time

Not many store put their Wiis on display anymore. The only reason why I got mine was because we asked them personally. We got one, but I wonder why they just don't display them...

I know of several stores who create their advertisments weeks (and sometimes months) in advance. Because of this, they have to limit the amount of consoles they sell in order to meet the demands of their consummers during those events.

I know outright lying to consummers doesn't sound like the right thing to do but honestly, if they were to say "We aren't selling the Wii's we currently have on stock right now", what do you think would happen?

Most likely, people will begin to beg for Wii's, going so far as to bribe employees, which management frowns upon. Violence could also break out, and all in all, it would turn into a rather unfavorable situation.

In those cases, saying they no longer have Wii's in stock, even when they do, is the "safe" route to take. Companies like this are in it to make a profit after all, and if withholding consoles until a later date would lead to that company making more money than selling them earlier, they'll do so.

Of course, there are other reasons why they could be doing that. Heck, maybe the emplyees just want to buy the Wii's themselves, and management is allowing them to keep enough in stock to satisfy the employees later. I don't know

That might actually be a justified reason.....

I mean the making more profits one... not the employees wanting the Wii's for themselves.... heck... what am I saying!? I already have one... and so do most of you if not all.... we should be happy!
