What is the Wii Light on my disc drive doing?

Can anyone help me, I was sat here going through this site when I glanced up at my Wii. There is now a blue light around the disc drive that keeps flashing bright and then dim then bright again. Does anyone know why this is? I only got my Wii today and am finding it a confusing console to use.

1. when it was reading a game which was upside down.
2. when it was trying to connect with the internet

Oh I dont have a game in it so does that mean it is trying to connect to the internet? What would it do that for?

when you first get your wii you always have a wii update so that is probably why it was blinking.
