More or less competition?

I was having a discussion with my boyfriend the other day about how competition between Micro$oft, Nintendo, and Sony would change if they worked together to make a single console where they would put all theirs games on.

We had completely different views, one one hand one of us thought that the companies would work harder to make better software for the system then on the other the person would claim that they would get lazy and make crap games because of no console war and such.

What do you people think?

Well, first of all, I don't think that they'd ever do it. The thrill of being better than someone else is so pleasurable. If they did, I think that they would start making crap games. I don'tse why game designers and programmers can't just make it compatible with just one more console than they already have. I know it takes awhile to do that, but it would earn even more money.

Funny you should bring this up. I found an interesting article about a One Console Future about 18months ago, which got some interesting replies. Check it out here.
My thoughts are, it won't happen, people/companies are just not that into sharing. Money makes the world go round - who would be making the money? Nintendo? Sony? An equal split?

Well the consoles would probably have to be slip profit, but every one who plays video games would by it. Then, they'd have to compete with the software to make more money right? I'm not asking if it's possible, it's just not. Tis a question of if they would be more of less competitive.

less competitive, alot more expensive for the console as there would be a monopolistic retailer!
it is seen in practice that an oligopolistic market is the best for the consumer as the big companies are always competing on price and quality producing better deals for us!

They might do that all the comapnies own shares in each other. Microsoft had made a deal with apple in the year 2000 whats not to say this will happen again
