I think that DVD playback is a bit uneccessary, but it would be nice!

Though, if you have a modern comptuer you most likely have a DVD player too.

Sure, it would be nice, and seeing they have a DVD drive in the Wii, there's really no reason not to. The software wouldn't take up much space, and they could even add 480i support, right?
