"The device was designed by Minnesota inventor Paul Wessel, after he noted that his son, who was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 3, kept hiding the device he used to test his blood sugar levels - many diabetes sufferers are required to test their blood sugar levels numerous times per day, by pricking their finger to obtain a drop of blood, which "is painful and annoying" according to Paul.

The defining moment came when Wessel's son forgot his Game Boy after departing for a family trip, requiring them to go back and retrieve it. "That moment something came to me - if I could combine blood glucose testing and video gaming technologies, perhaps Luke would be more motivated to test," said Paul.

The official Glucoboy website states that "In addition to a stand-alone blood glucose meter, the Glucoboy contains 2 full length video games and a mini-arcade. To access the video games, the Glucoboy must be inserted into the cartridge slot on a Nintendo Game Boy® Advance System, or into the Game Boy® cartridge slot on a Nintendo DS."

"Blood glucose test results are converted into Glucose Reward Points (GRPs) that can be used to unlock games, or converted to in game currency. For example, in the included Knock ‘Em Downs game, GRPs can be converted into tokens. In the game, tokens can be spent to purchase items."

As of today, Australia has the Glucoboy available for sale via Diabetes Australia's State and Territory organisations for $299.95 RRP, according to the Diabetes NSW site." Link
