Componant, better or worse?

As I have heard a whole load of different opinians on this can anyone explain the whole thing about componant being better or worse.

What I mean is, has it more lines/less lines. Does the T.V upscale/downscale anyway?

Im using a 32" LCD HD Sony Bravia and want to avoid using the supplied scart which I am using at the moment to improve the overall quality.
