Earlier today, Sony released their Q3 financial results. Sony sold over 6 million PS3s, and despite PSP and PS2 hardware being down, they saw an increase in profits, marking the first time Sony's gaming division has been in the black for years.

And though many have been quick to write off the PS3, the system is performing roughly on par with the original PlayStation. After four fiscal years, the Sony shifted 32.8 million PS1s. Surprisingly, this is less than the PS3, which has sold 33.5 million units after 3 fiscal years and 3 quarters.

It's important to note, though, that 1997 - 1998 were the first years that the PS1 started to gain momentum, as iconic franchise entries like Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil 2 all hit during that year. Still, this should help to dispell the notion that the PS3 is a complete failure.
